Self defense. But there was something else this movie made me realize. Brigitte Mira had to leave the set briefly during rehearsals. Rainer spoke her lines ofscreen. Here I am acting with him onscreen and suddenly I am seized by a laughing fit. Rainer has become Biggi. Rainer could be Hanna; Rainer could be whoever happened to be his leading lady. He actually became the beautiful woman - that was his emancipation. He identified with them. I finally understood how he structured his movies. To Rainer, those characters were objects of projection. He revealed the way he saw himself through them. He was always the other character, too.
